Union Pacific
Moves goods on freight trains across the western United States.
📖 Its story
In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a law to build a railroad that would cross the United States from side to side. Union Pacific built tracks from the east, and another company, Central Pacific, built from the west. In 1869 they met in Utah and joined the country together with a golden spike!
💵 How it makes money
It charges to carry things by train, like grain, coal, chemicals, cars and shipping containers.
🤯 Fun fact
On May 10, 1869, the 'golden spike' was driven in at Promontory Summit, Utah, to finish the first transcontinental railroad.
👍 The good part
Its tracks are very hard to copy, and trains move lots of cargo while using less fuel than trucks.
⚠️ The risk
If the economy slows down, fewer products get shipped, and it also competes with trucks.
