Welltower

Owns health care buildings, mostly homes for older people.

📖 Its story

In 1970, Fritz Wolfe and Bruce Thompson started a company in Lima, Ohio, called Health Care Fund. Their idea was to buy buildings for health care and rent them out. It moved to Toledo in 1986, and in 2015 it changed its name to Welltower.

💵 How it makes money

It earns money from the rent on its buildings and from what residents pay to live in its senior homes.

🤯 Fun fact

Before it was called Welltower, it was called Health Care Fund and then Health Care REIT.

👍 The good part

There are more and more older people who need a comfortable, safe place to live.

⚠️ The risk

If the cost of loans or staff goes up, or fewer people live in its senior homes, it earns less.
