Micron

Makes memory chips that store information in phones, computers and servers.

📖 Its story

In 1978, four friends started designing chips in the basement of a dentist's office in Boise, Idaho. They didn't have much money, but local business people believed in them and helped them. Today it is one of the biggest memory makers in the world.

💵 How it makes money

By selling memory chips (DRAM and NAND) to makers of phones, computers and data centers.

🤯 Fun fact

One of its first big investors was J. R. Simplot, a businessman who got rich from potatoes.

👍 The good part

Artificial intelligence needs lots and lots of memory, and Micron is one of the few companies that makes it on a huge scale.

⚠️ The risk

The price of memory goes up and down a lot, so its profits can change suddenly.
